The clutch master cylinder moves hydraulic fluid through the line to the slave cylinder, which then depresses your clutch pack. The most common symptoms of a bad master cylinder are low fluid levels and soft pedal feel. These can be similar to the slave cylinder failing so replacing both at the same time would be ideal.
