A SPY -- NOT IN DISGUISE?

We have seen the MK8 Golf with its GTI and R counterparts spotted around the internet and even the new Golf R making a surprise appearance at this years Wookies in the Woods event at the Tail of the Dragon. It has some very sharp edges that has its fans and foes. But with all the leaked images and surprise appearances, we have a version of the new MK8 Golf lineup that we more than likely won't ever get to see state side. Say hello to the spied, without any disguise, MK8 Golf R Wagon!

THE STATS

With the newest teaser rolling around the Nurburgring, spy shots show the family wagon fitted with Recaro-style butt hugging front seats and a full roll cage! No, don't think the roll cage will be a standard feature for this one from Volkswagen, but at least they're being safe with the rigorous testing! Here is what we DO know about the latest and greatest from Volkswagen: under the hood should be the same turbocharged 2.0 liter engine we see in the current MK7.5 R we have with 315 horsepower 310 pound-feet of torque. The Golf R Variant is going to be an AWD-only option as with the R's reputation, paired with a tasteful seven-speed, dual-clutch automatic transmission. The hot hatch Golf R currently runs a 0-60 in about 4.7 seconds, but with the extra elbow room in the wagon variation, it's expected to be a little slower than the smaller hatch.

WHY CAN'T WE HAVE IT HERE

With Audi's re-introduction of the avant in the A6 for 2020 and the monstrous RS6 Avant, it is rather safe to say that there is a small, yet dedicated market for the wagon community. For this reason, it makes sense that Volkswagen does not want to bring the grocery-getter hot-wagon to the States. With that being said, we will have to settle with the normal hatch version of the Golf R and GTI for the 2022 line up hopefully hitting dealerships in late 2021.
