Thinking about doing your own BMW repairs?

While you may be able to handle common repairs such as filters, oil changes or a battery replacement, certain jobs are best left to the experts.

Here are five repairs where you should let BMW specialists take the wheel.

1. Bodywork Repairs

If you've been involved in a collision or simply dinged your car by accident, you're likely to have some dents and scratches in your bodywork.

Under no circumstance should you try and fix these yourself. If you do, you could end up doing more harm than good, eventually having to pay even more for a professional repair down the road.

Bodywork is about more than just buying and installing new parts or giving your car a new lick of paint. It takes a great deal of precision and skill, so this one is best left to the experts.

2. Timing Belt Replacement

In order to replace your timing belt, you'll have to take around half of the engine off. Then, once you're finished, you'll, of course, have to put it all back together again.

Not only is this a long and arduous process, but it also leaves a dangerously large amount of room for error. Unless you're an expert, it's almost impossible to disassemble and reassemble all your engine parts properly. If you make the slightest mistake, you could cause irreparable damage to your engine.

To eliminate any risk and have peace of mind, let someone else do this one for you.

3. Computer System Repairs

Most cars are now controlled by computers, and that includes BMWs.

When there's an error, glitch or issue, you'll see an icon or a code light up on your dashboard.

If you don't understand the ins and outs of these sophisticated systems, it's not advisable to start tinkering with them. Go to an auto repair shop that's well-versed in BMW control systems, and let them handle it.

4. Windshield Repair

A cracked, chipped or broken windshield is extremely dangerous. The slightest impact could cause it to shatter, sending shards of glass over both you and your passengers.

You should always get your windshield fixed by a specialist because it isn’t worth the risk.

5. Radiator

Think you can replace your own car radiator? Think again.

If you make a simple mistake such as failing to secure the hoses to the engine, you could cause it to blow. Then, you'll have to spend hundreds or even thousands of dollars to rectify it.
