New M5 Touring Coming to the USA?

G99 M5 Teaser Photos Revealed

13 years. It has been at least 13 years since the world has seen the M5 Touring in production. The E61 M5, made from 2007 to 2010, was the very last M5 wagon made, until now. For the seventh generation of the M5, BMW is going to give the people what they want, a very spicy wagon. Not only is it a breath of fresh air in the current automotive sea of SUVs, but it is definitely a beacon of hope that we may get more wagon action in the future. Having a practical, and powerful car that gives me the room of an SUV but the driving dynamics of a sport sedan? Sign me up.

Third 5 Series Wagon Coming To The US?

Sure, most people are probably thinking, “Great, another wagon that the US is going to miss out on.” Well, rumor has it this trend will hopefully be broken this time around and we could actually see some of these on our shores. The two previous M5 wagons, the E34 from 1992 to 1995, and the previously mentioned E61, are very rare and highly sought after as they came to market with roughly a thousand specimens each. The recent BMW teaser seems to indicate we are primed for a third outing of the highly coveted wagon.

Patents Filed Give Us a First Look

Here’s what we know so far: The new touring will be powered by a hybrid powertrain that is often found in other M models. The most likely choice is probably the twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 that’s currently in the BMW XM. In the XM this motor generates 738 HP and 738 lb-feet of torque. We don’t know how the numbers will shake out when this does release, however we do know this is going to be one serious grocery getter. Based on some patent drawings that were filed, we can get a little glimpse of the not yet officially revealed BMW estate. There is definitely a lot in common with the current sedan, so this means smaller kidney grilles, very sporty headlights, and some pretty flush door handles. It's pretty clear this is set to take on Aud's RS6 and Mercedes' E63 wagon respectively.

Wagons Making a Comeback?

From what we’ve seen so far this will be a welcome addition to the lineup, and should it come to the US, it will be pretty awesome. We just have to wait and see before an official announcement gives us all the details. But here's hoping it's well received and proves there is still a market for cool wagon enthusiasts out there. With luck, maybe we could even get the M3 Touring here eventually. Bring on the wagons!
